Activities at Sunrise

Sunrise is not a waiting room. It is a building with music coming out of it, a therapy gym down the hall, a life-size Jenga tower on the floor and a party for every holiday we can find an excuse for. Members come to us for the care. They stay for the day itself. Everything below is adapted so that everyone can take part — whether they walk in on their own or arrive in a wheelchair — and it is a sample of what we do, not a limit.

Physical Activities

○ Chair yoga — Gentle stretching, breathing and balance work done entirely from a seated position, so nobody has to get down onto a mat. It loosens stiff shoulders, hips and hands, and each person takes it at whatever pace suits them that morning.

○ Chair Zumba — The same Latin rhythms as a standing Zumba class, led from a chair. It raises the heart rate and works on coordination, and it is reliably the loudest and happiest room in the building.

○ TheraBand exercises — Light resistance-band work for arms, shoulders and legs. The goal is practical strength: standing up out of a chair without help, carrying a bag, reaching a shelf, staying steady on the stairs at home.

○ Physical therapy room — A dedicated room set up like a small gym, used for guided exercise and for members working toward specific goals with our therapy staff.

Creative Activities

○ Stencil painting — Painting with stencils, so members whose hands shake, or who have never painted before, still finish something they are proud to take home. Good for hand control and for concentration.

○ Sculpture painting — Figures painted by hand, one small section at a time. It is slower, quieter work than most of the schedule, and it suits members who would rather sit with one thing for a while.

○ Jewelry making — Beading bracelets and necklaces. Fine motor work disguised as a pleasure, and most of what gets made leaves the building as a gift for a daughter or a grandchild.

○ Manicures — Nail care and polish. It is a small thing and it matters; people sit up straighter for the rest of the day.

○ Jello making — A simple, hands-on activity the whole group can help with: mixing, pouring and waiting together, then sharing the result.

○ …and more

Classes

○ English classes — Everyday, practical English for members who are still building confidence with it — the words you need at the doctor’s office, at the pharmacy, on the telephone.

○ Spanish classes — Sessions in Spanish for the members who are most comfortable in it, and for anyone who wants to learn. Much of the day here happens in both languages.

○ Cooking classes — Recipes demonstrated and talked through as a group, with members helping where they can. Meals at the center are catered, so this one is about the pleasure and the conversation rather than the kitchen.

○ …and more

Games and Recreation

○ Mini basketball — Shooting practice at a scaled-down hoop, played seated or standing. Light competition, a lot of cheering, and more shoulder work than anyone notices at the time.

○ Seated volleyball — Volleyball played from chairs with a soft, slow ball. Everyone can reach it, and it gets arms and reflexes working without anyone having to stay on their feet.

○ Mini golf — A putting course set up at the center. Steady hands, patience, and a standing excuse for good-natured argument about the score.

○ Life-size Tetris — The old video game rebuilt at floor scale with oversized blocks. It is a workout for spatial thinking as much as for the body, and it turns into a team effort fast.

○ Life-size Jenga — Giant Jenga. One block at a time, everybody watching, and a thoroughly satisfying crash at the end.

○ Group table games — Guessing and memory games played around a table, including a house favorite, “What’s in Your Purse.” These are the ones that get people talking to each other.

○ …and more

Holidays and Special Events

We celebrate every holiday we can — Christmas, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and everything in between — with live entertainment, music and a real party. These are the days people talk about for weeks afterward.

Why It Feels Different Here

Any center can print a list of activities. What is hard to copy is the room they happen in. Our activity staff know every member by name — who needs coaxing and who needs to be first in line. The equipment is real, not token: a therapy room laid out like a gym, games built at full size, art materials that produce something worth carrying home. The whole day runs in English and Spanish, so nobody sits through it half-understanding. And the schedule keeps growing, because members keep asking for things.
